Privacy Policy

Last Updated: February 2, 2026

1. Introduction

Welcome to CleanLife ("we," "our," or "us"). We are committed to protecting your privacy and being transparent about how we collect, use, and share your information. This Privacy Policy explains our practices regarding the data we collect through our mobile application and website.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Health and Wellness Data (Mostly Stored Locally)

CleanLife lets you enter health and wellness information to personalize your experience. By default, this information is stored locally on your device (not automatically uploaded to our servers), unless you choose to share it through a specific feature.

  • Personal Health Metrics: Age, weight (in kilograms), height (in centimeters), gender, and activity level (sedentary, lightly active, moderately active, very active, or extra active)
  • Health Goals: Your selected health objectives such as weight loss, weight maintenance, muscle gain, diabetes management, or heart health
  • Dietary Information: Food allergies and dietary preferences (such as vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, etc.)
  • Daily Logging: Items you add to your daily food log and the servings you record (stored locally)
  • Optional Photo Submissions: If you choose to upload ingredient label photos or barcode photos to help improve our product database

2.2 Technical Data

We automatically collect certain technical information.

  • Device Identifier: A unique identifier generated and stored locally on your device. When you scan barcodes, we may send this identifier to our servers to power scan history, enforce free-tier limits, and help prevent abuse.
  • Usage Data: Scan events (date, time, barcode scanned) and basic interaction patterns related to scanning
  • Language Preference: Your selected app language for localization purposes

2.3 No Account Required

CleanLife does not require you to create an account, and the app does not require email login to use core features.

  • No email/password sign-in: We do not require an email address or password to use the app, and we do not collect email addresses for authentication.
  • Support contact: If you contact support, you may choose to provide an email address so we can reply.
  • Subscriptions: If you purchase a subscription in the mobile app, payments are processed by Apple. We receive subscription status and related purchase metadata (e.g., entitlement status and transaction identifiers) through our subscription provider.
  • Website purchases (if applicable): If you purchase a subscription on our website, you may be asked to provide an email address for receipts and support. This email is not used for logging into the app.

3. How We Collect Your Information

We collect information through the following methods:

  • On-device storage (local): When you manually enter your health profile, dietary preferences, allergies, and goals in the app, this information is stored locally on your device.
  • Barcode scanning: When you scan a barcode, we send the barcode (and, if available, your device identifier) to our servers to look up product information and return results. If you have selected dietary preferences or allergies, the app may also send a limited subset of those settings to generate warnings (we do not require an account for this).
  • Photo uploads (optional): If you choose to upload ingredient label photos or barcode photos to help complete product information
  • Daily logging (local): When you add items to your daily log in the app, this is stored on your device.
  • Automatic collection: Basic technical data such as device identifiers and scan events are collected when you use scanning features

4. How We Use Your Information

We use your information for the following purposes:

4.1 Core App Functionality

  • Calculate personalized daily nutrition targets based on your profile (typically on-device)
  • Track your daily food intake and compare it against your targets (on-device)
  • When you scan a barcode, process product data and return results, including generating warnings based on your selected dietary preferences and allergies
  • Identify potential allergens in scanned products based on your declared allergies
  • Filter and highlight products that match your dietary preferences
  • Provide health scores and processing level information (NOVA groups) for scanned products
  • Generate nutrition insights, trends, and streak tracking based on your food log history

4.2 AI-Powered Meal Suggestions

Important: When you use our AI meal suggestion feature (available to premium subscribers), we share specific data with our third-party AI service provider (OpenAI) to generate personalized meal recommendations. The data shared includes:

  • Your current daily nutritional intake (calories, protein, carbs, fat, fiber consumed so far today)
  • Your personalized nutrition targets (daily goals for calories, protein, carbs, fat, fiber)
  • Your declared food allergies
  • Your dietary preference (e.g., vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free)

This data is sent to OpenAI's API in real-time to generate contextual meal suggestions that help you meet your remaining nutrition goals while respecting your allergies and dietary preferences. OpenAI processes this data according to their own privacy policy and data protection commitments. OpenAI has committed to:

  • Not using data submitted via their API to train their models
  • Retaining API data for a maximum of 30 days for abuse monitoring, after which it is deleted
  • Implementing enterprise-grade security measures to protect data in transit and at rest
  • Complying with applicable data protection regulations including GDPR and CCPA

You can review OpenAI's privacy commitments at https://openai.com/privacy and their API data usage policy at https://openai.com/policies/api-data-usage-policies.

We do not share personal contact details (such as your name or email), your full health profile, or your complete food scan history with AI service providers. Only the aggregated nutritional data and dietary restrictions listed above are shared for the sole purpose of generating meal suggestions.

4.3 Product Database Enhancement

  • Store and display user-contributed ingredient lists, nutrition facts, and product photos to help other users make informed choices
  • Improve the accuracy and completeness of our product database through community contributions

4.4 Service Improvement and Analytics

  • Your complete health profile (age, weight, height, gender, activity level, goals)
  • Your allergies and dietary preferences
  • Your daily food logs and consumption history
  • Your favorited products
  • Your device identifier

This data remains on your device unless you explicitly choose to delete it using the "Reset app data" feature in Settings, or unless you uninstall the app.

The following data is stored on our secure servers:

  • Product information from barcode scans (product names, brands, nutrition facts, barcodes)

  • Subscription status and related purchase metadata (if you choose to subscribe)
  • Support communications (e.g., messages you send us and our replies)

We do not automatically upload or store your full health profile or daily food log on our servers unless you explicitly choose a feature that uploads data (for example, photo submissions).

5.3 Retention Periods

  • Product data and contributions: Retained indefinitely to maintain our product database for all users
  • Scan events: Retained for up to 2 years for analytics and abuse prevention
  • Subscription metadata: Retained as needed for subscription management, support, and accounting purposes
  • AI service data: Data sent to OpenAI for meal suggestions is retained by OpenAI for a maximum of 30 days, then automatically deleted

6. Data Sharing and Disclosure

We share your information only in the following limited circumstances:

6.1 Third-Party AI Service Providers

As described in Section 4.2, we share limited nutritional data with OpenAI to provide AI-powered meal suggestions. This sharing occurs only when you actively use the meal suggestion feature and only includes aggregated nutritional data, allergies, and dietary preferences—never your personal identifiers, full health profile, or complete food history.

6.2 Community Contributions

When you choose to share product contributions (ingredient lists, nutrition facts, or photos) with the community, this information becomes visible to all app users to help them make informed food choices. Your contributions are anonymous and not linked to your email or personal identity.

These service providers are contractually obligated to protect your data and use it only for the specific services they provide to us.

We may disclose your information if required by law, court order, or government regulation, or if we believe disclosure is necessary to:

  • Comply with legal obligations
  • Protect our rights, property, or safety
  • Protect the rights, property, or safety of our users or the public
  • Prevent fraud or abuse of our service

6.5 Business Transfers

If CleanLife is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you via a prominent notice in the app and/or on our website before your data is transferred and becomes subject to a different privacy policy.

7. Your Privacy Rights and Choices

7.1 Access and Control

  • View your data: You can view all your locally stored health profile, allergies, dietary preferences, and food logs within the app's Profile and Daily sections

You can delete ingredient lists and photos you've uploaded to our servers by using the "Delete uploaded contributions" feature in Settings. This removes your contributions associated with your device identifier.

7.3 Requests and Deletion

If you would like to request deletion of server-side data we may have (such as uploaded contributions associated with your device identifier), contact us at support@cleanlifeapp.org.

7.4 Opt-Out of AI Features

You can choose not to use the AI meal suggestion feature. Simply avoid accessing that feature, and no data will be shared with our AI service provider.

7.5 Marketing Communications

We do not send marketing emails.

8. Data Security

We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your information:

  • Encryption: All data transmitted between your device and our servers is encrypted using TLS/SSL
  • Access controls: Server-side data is protected by strict access controls and authentication
  • Regular security reviews: We regularly review and update our security practices

However, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is 100% secure. While we strive to protect your information, we cannot guarantee absolute security.

9. Children's Privacy

Our app is not intended for children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us at support@cleanlifeapp.org, and we will delete that information.

10. International Data Transfers

Your information may be transferred to and processed in countries other than your country of residence. These countries may have data protection laws that differ from your country. By using our app, you consent to the transfer of your information to our servers and third-party service providers located worldwide.

13. Your Consent

By using CleanLife, you acknowledge that you have read and understood this Privacy Policy and consent to the collection, use, and sharing of your information as described herein. When you first use features that collect sensitive health data or share data with AI services, we will present an in-app consent dialog explaining exactly what data is collected and how it will be used.
